New Elliptical Tensioner Shapes Up Wind Market

Bolting and machining specialist, Hydratight, introduces the Elliptical Base Bolt Tensioner, whose unique elliptical-shaped chamber meets head-on the problem of access-restricted base bolts. The new base bolt tensioner is perfect for all OEM tower base bolting.
Specially designed for customers with access issues, the elliptical shape of the new device offers a 20 percent reduction in tool width - allowing it to fit all turbine applications including limited-clearance inner base bolts. This pioneering compact design allows the tool to fit several sizes of Williams and Dyson base bolts.
Safety and performance enhancements include asymmetric rams, spring-loaded sockets, spring retraction and a positive stop, to prevent damage through misuse.
Like Hydratight's round-base bolt tensioner, the elliptical model eliminates potential thread-fit problems by using the existing hex nut on the stressing bar to induce the required load. Hydratight's base bolt tensioners are lightweight and compact, offering up to 25mm stroke one-step operation. They accurately and consistently apply the precise load to critical base bolts.

The high cyclic loads of turbine operation demand that the bolts securing blades and towers to each other and to the ground are as accurately and uniformly tightened to their design load as possible.
