Rock Anchor Tensioner Secures Smaller Turbine Bases

Bolting and machining specialist, Hydratight, has expanded its specialty wind product range with the new Rock Anchor Tensioner, specially designed for work on smaller concrete wind turbine bases.
Similar to the company's standard Base Bolt Tensioner, the Rock Anchor is custom designed to fit the 2.5in diameter, 150-grade all-thread bar used to anchor concrete wind turbine pads or bases to the ground.
The Rock Anchor Tensioner accurately and consistently applies the proper bolt load to critical concrete rock anchor bolts. Precise loading is required as under-tensioning can lead to bolt fatigue and over-tightening can cause improper bolt stress or breakage.
The Rock Anchor Tensioner, used with Hydratight's wind-specific, high-pressure electric tensioning pumps, provides a complete mobile pad-fixing system. The tensioner weighs only 129lb and can be moved by one or two operators. Quick to set-up and operate, the system offers an extra-long 1" stroke, with spring return for faster operation. Easy-grip handles allow quick, secure positioning. The Rock Anchor Tensioner can also be used for grout bonded rock and cast-in-place concrete anchoring.
The new tensioner was designed in response to a request from California-based engineering company Patrick and Henderson Inc, which has championed smaller turbine pads. Smaller pads offer significant cost savings over standard pads - including a reduction in the area of land required and fewer man hours for installation.
Hydratight has been a major participant in the growth of renewable energy systems for several years - specifically as market leader in bolt tightening systems offering the accurate, uniform bolt loads needed in the construction of turbine towers and blades. The high cyclic loads of turbine operation demand that the bolts securing blades and towers to each other and to the ground are as accurately and uniformly tightened to their design load as possible.
Hydratight's specially-developed hydraulic tensioning tools achieve designed loads simultaneously on all tensioner-applied bolts, eliminating inaccuracy and ultimately allowing turbines to work safely at their designed stresses.
